85/100An absurd premise for a manga, but is executed very well.Continue on AniListAssassination Classroom is an action, comedy, Shōnen Jump manga written and illustrated by Yuusei Matsui. Collected in 21 volumes, it is Matsui's 2nd work after the conclusion of his detective manga Demon Detective Nougami Neuro.
Assassination Classroom has a wild and unique premise. Set in modern-day Japan, the students in Kunugigaoka Junior High's Class 3-E receive a new teacher: a sentient, octopus-man that moves at Mach 20, who is also responsible for destroying the moon. Now threatening to do the same within a years’ time to the Earth, he wishes to be the homeroom teacher of Class 3-E. The students are tasked with assassinating their new teacher before graduation, with an opportunity to win 10 billion yen and save the earth.
The premise is absurd, but is executed, developed and explored well. The series is not a battle shonen nor does it have much violence, the manga is more of a school/slice of life with the theme of assassination. The students of Class 3-E, dubbed the "End Class", are treated as failures by the rest of the school because of their poor academic performances. The school uses the class as a psychological tool for the rest of the students, to encourage studying and feel superior.
The octopus teacher, named Koro-Sensei sets out a goal that while the students attempt to assassinate him, he will help regain their self-confidence, improving booth their academic performances and turn them into skilled assassins. The story is a decent length, it incorporates a variety of mini-arcs from: beating out the superior students by gaining better results on a written test, to fighting the greatest assassins in the world sent to kill Koro-Sensei, to preparing an assassination trap that not even the said Mach 20 creature could escape from.
The manga concludes fantastically, having a great ending that ties up all lose ends and leaves the reader with a satisfying feeling upon completion.
The characters are an entire classroom, around 28 students as well as their 3 teachers. With such a large number of characters, there comes the problem of many of them not being worth remembering. Despite this the author still attempts to give each student as much screen time as possible, however some gain much more than others.
The most noteworthy students being Nagisa and Karma. Karma in particularly has an amazingly fun personality, great character progression and development throughout the manga. Nagisa despite looking like a femboy is the most gifted student regarding the arts of assassination, as he self discovers his talents.
The highlight of the manga is Koro-Sensei himself. Being a big yellow octopus man, while seemingly invincible at first, capable of moving at 20 times the speed of sound. Pulling absurd stunts such as grabbing military missiles midair, and using them as stoves for making takoyaki just to troll his students. He is a knowledgeable, flawed, comedic and compassionate teacher.
Despite the complex relationship of his students attempting to kill him in every opportunity, his love for his students is genuine. While the idea of bonding while they happily fill out their sentences with the intent of killing, might sound ridiculous, trust me it works within the context of the series.
The manga has pretty good art, Matsui's style is clean, recognizable and consistent. The style is cartoony with exaggerated comedic facial expressions, but the solid paneling along with the well drawn action scenes presented in good motion flow. The art gives the reader good amounts of enjoyment while reading.
Assassination Classroom is a manga worth checking out. It has an absurd premise that is executed very well, either reading the manga or watching the solid anime adaption by studio Lerche, there is something that you will love about the crazy adventure of Class 3-E.

94/100Teacher. Target. Student. Assassin. Two sides of the same coin.Continue on AniListSpoiler warning: Read at your own risk.
Premise
Contrary to how it might seem, Assassination Classroom isn't a shonen about kiling a tentacle monster anywhere except for the surface level. It is important to take a step away from the plot's minutiae and actually consider it as a whole. At the end of the day, what is Assassination Classroom about?
AssClass is a story of regret. The main players in the plot in Assassination Classroom all regret. They either regret their strength, or they regret their weakness, and this idea of regret is used to set up a parallel between teaching and assassination. Pay attention to how different characters assassinate and teach for the same reason that I'll point out in the rest of this review.
Teaching because of Regret
Teaching and assasination. Author Yusei Matsui presents these two seemingly disparate professions as one and the same. So, we must ask ourselves, who are our teachers?
Koro-Sensei and Principal Asano are our teachers, and they are presented throughout the whole plot as rivals to each other. They differ in teaching philosophy, methods, morals, and even genetic makeup, but they both teach. Why? Well, we can look to Chapter 125 for the answer to this. "Two monsters became teachers at the same school. One because he regretted his strength. One because he regretted his weakness." Something interesting to note is that in other translations of AssClass, this line is actually translated as "One to atone for his strength, and one to atone for his weakness." Principal Asano sees his weakness after his pupil dies as inexcusable and uses it as a reason to exert his forceful influence onto Kuunugigaoka, resulting in the social structure we see in AssClass. Koro-Sensei, on the other hand, regrets his monstrous strength that results in the loss of his loved one. He realizes that he's done nothing but abuse his power, and decides to assume a weak form that can protect his loved ones, instead of a strong form that can't.
Killing because of Regret
Another major player in AssClass is Yanagisawa. Yanagisawa's experimentation is what results in the birth of Koro-Sensei to begin with. What is his role? His parallel? What are his regrets? What is he atoning for?
Well, that's the thing. He doesn't. He doesn't atone for his actions, regardless of how horrible they may be. Yanagisawa has regrets about his weaknesses but he doesn't atone for his mistakes. Yanagisawa is actually the contrast to Nagisa Shiota. Yanagisawa is a privileged man who knows all of the luxuries life can afford. He doesn't have to deal with hardship until his failure with the moon and almost fatal encounter with Koro-Sensei, which results in him turning into the monster that we see at the end of the plot. Nagisa, on the other hand, is not so lucky. His grades are subpar, his identity is a mess, his family life is fractured, and he has precious little to be proud of. When he discovers his talent for killing, instead of getting a swelled head or flaunting it, as a more boastful individual might, Nagisa immediately goes to his beloved teacher and asks him for advice. This inherent considerateness is what separates Nagisa from Yanagisawa. If Yanagisawa discovered such a talent, he would never bother going to anyone and talking them about it, as he already sees himself above others. This establishes another parallel in our plot: Motives for killing.
Nagisa targets Koro-Sensei because he regrets his newly discovered strength; he wants to put his talent to a good use first to determine whether he should abandon it afterwards or not.
Yanagisawa targets Koro-Sensei because he regrets his weaknesses; to make himself forget that he is not perfect.Do you see where I'm going with this? AssClass is full of these kinds of parallels that are there if you just pay attention.
To Build or to Destroy
What, then comes as a result of this regret? What do our characters do with it? Koro-Sensei's regret causes him to fill in as 3-E's homeroom teacher for a year. During this year, he does his best to build. He builds trust, he builds relationships with his students, he builds his students' skills, whether they be academically, physically, socially, or emotionally. He does anything and everything to protect the lives and happiness of his students. His presence is felt in his students' lives even after his death, as is seen with his effort in helping Nagisa's family reconcile.
Principal Asano's regret causes him to make power plays in escalatingly dire ways. He plays dirty, and he does it often. He erodes his school's morals, he discriminates against 3-E with gusto, and this all eventually comes crashing down upon him as the student body loses trust in him and he eventually is forced to resign. He might have seen his ideology as strong, but in reality, he was still just as weak as always.
Nagisa's regret leads him to work as hard as he can to prove himself worthy of his strength. He constantly does his best, whether by studying for a test or by beating the ever living shit out of Karma to try to save Koro-Sensei. He's built a meaningful relationship through the year with all of 3-E, and his goal of killing Koro-Sensei comes to fruition in the most tragic way possible. His experiences with Koro-Sensei have built an entire world of experiences and a plethora of relationships, but it came at the cost of Koro-Sensei.
Yanagisawa's regret leads him to constant suicidal bids at Koro-Sensei's life. These bids go from Itona to Kaede to the Reaper to even his own body, as he uses the tentacles to artifically give him power. His, goal of killing Koro-Sensei die, however, never comes to fruition, as he gets launched out of the Thunderdome and it ends up being the students of 3-E who kill Koro-Sensei. His quest for strength results in his own destruction.
What does this even mean? Matsui is trying to tell us that building is the only way to truly be strong. If you try to burn all your bridges in order to seek power, it will absolutely come crashing down upon you, and it will not end well. Nagisa takes this to heart and becomes a teacher himself, taking on Koro-Sensei's role in the future.
Basically, what I'm saying is, AssClass tells you that Those who can kill, teach.

80/100This teacher is the bomb!
--- ___Assassination Classroom, a work that masterfully plays with mystery, surprise, and above all, the art of assassination as silent craft___
Assassination Classroom tells the story of Class 3-E and __Koro-sensei__, a kind of alien octopus straight out of classic Japanese B-movies. As surprising as it sounds, he becomes their teacher and genuinely tries to help the students learn—while they, in turn, try to assassinate him. Why? Because Koro-sensei is responsible for blowing up the moon and has threatened to destroy the Earth unless his request is fulfilled. That request? To teach Class 3-E until the end of the school year. If the students manage to kill him before then, they’ll be rewarded with a whopping 10 billion yen. Throughout their journey, the students discover many unique skills among themselves and prove that being a “bad” student doesn’t mean you can't be amazing—especially if you put in the effort.
While the anime focuses heavily on three of the students and gives them more of a leading role, the manga does a better job of highlighting all the students' individual traits, giving them stronger development. It showcases __Karma’s__ cunning fox-like cleverness, the humanization of __Ritsu—an A.I.—__ __Chiba’s__ sharpshooting skills, and of course, the core of it all: __Nagisa__, who strikes like a silent and dangerous viper.
This work by __Matsui-sensei__ is incredible—mixing simple artwork with a strikingly bold style to depict just how horrible or monstrous people can be. This is especially seen in characters like __Gakuho Asano__, __Takaoka__ (the temporary P.E. teacher), or even in Koro-sensei himself—a calm, gentle, and gullible octopus, particularly when seduction is involved. This contrast is one of Matsui’s most admirable qualities as a mangaka. He’s been doing this since his debut series Neuro: Supernatural Detective and continues in his more recent work The Elusive Samurai: using a light, comedic style to deliver shamelessly intense moments and brutal character transformations, exposing the inner demons of people.
What I find most admirable about this series is how it constantly reinforces the value of effort—that you should never judge a book by its cover. It conveys pain in a powerful way, and the ending is absolutely sublime—something I never saw coming. It plays with plot twists a lot—maybe too much at times—but just enough to avoid feeling repetitive. And it even introduces surprisingly charming characters like Jelavic, who starts as a typical femme fatale using seductive tactics (classic fanservice), but gradually becomes someone you genuinely care about.
