╰┈➤ story
"i'm a high-ranking officer of the evil league, which fights daily to claim the earth in the name of our home planet. that said, today is my day off..."
and i really could not put it in better words than mr. villain himself did. the show really is just about that.
so, follow the oh-so-evil mr. villain as he does grocery shopping, takes photos of pandas, discovers earthling's traditions, and... helps his enemies and strangers??? well, it's his day off, so not like it matters. you'd be tired of being evil every day, too... the thing ahead is sort of spoiler-ish, so i preferred to tag it:
~!sadly, the show has some plot holes and a few things are left unexplained or not explained well enough. while of course it is not something crucial for us to know, as the show is not focused on that, the MC can just... transform into his bad guy form... and?? we don't know how?? and why?? is it because he's not from earth?? speaking of him being a bad guy, we don't even know what planet or universe did he come from, where is the evil organization's base located
i mean, if it's on earth... someone would notice such a big ass building, i believe??, and much more. not only that, but the tree spirits kids just... exist. and that's that. the things related to rangers were unexplained for a very long time as well. we're supposed to get attached to these characters, even tho their backgrounds and introductions are kinda lacking and flawed. like yes, the story doesn't need all that to be cute and silly, but it is kinda required to make the watcher more invested in it. while it is a cool watch that makes you reflect on life a little, it really could be a bit more than that story and plot-wise. the deeper i was into the show, the more i felt like the author was running out ideas and just had to introduce those "tree spirits" or a damn robot cat. it all just felt kinda forced later on-!~╰┈➤ characters
as you can probably already tell from the previous section, the main character is just the goofiest of silly gooses. he's just a little guy!! a little guy that becomes overjoyed thanks to things that we often take for granted; be that ice cream, pandas, or anything really. all of his adventures are adorable, and the things he does really do put a smile on your face. it gets a little repetitive overtime, but he's still a cutie patootie.
when it comes to the side cast, it isn't very notable, but it does its job well. none of the characters are particularly annoying which is honestly great, and the interactions they have with the main character tend to be really heartwarming or just funny.
╰┈➤ art
the arstyle and animation are good, simply. it's not the kind of beautiful artstyle that "glows", but it never looks bad. explanation in depth:
the best example to show what i mean is probably loving yamada which has some really ugly close-up frames. but since i generally dislike that anime, i might be biased, so i will use my favorite romcom of all time as another example: bokuyaba. the problem with bokuyaba is that some frames that show characters from a distance look a little silly. and, like... with "Mr villain's day off" it never happens.
long story short: what i like about this anime's artstyle is that it always stays nice n consistent, even if it's kinda average.
╰┈➤ music
both op and ed are nice. those songs are just cool. once again, it's nothing exceptional, but they contribute greatly to the very pleasant and relaxing experience that this anime provides. i like how they were swaped with one another in two episodes.
the op is very chill and has this ending-ish vibe in the best way possible. it's like preparing us for 20 minutes of pure, relaxing joy~!! especially considering the fact that most of the time it's played before the episode even starts.
the ending on the other hand is very energetic and puts you in a good mood, as if it's preparing you to face reality once again; because that's what that show is all about, after all. it wants to show us just how more fun life is if we pay attention to the little things.
╰┈➤ extra
obviously, this isn't the first wholesome anime to exist, so there are quite a few shows i could recomend. my first pick would be without a doubt the yakuza's guide to babysitting, which i personally believe is a 10/10. Both of those shows are about an adult guy being put in a totally new situation, and both of the main characters are usually "the bad guy". but yakuza's guide has a bit more action than this anime, i think.
feel like watching more goofy silly men?? go for play it cool, guys. the way of the househusband is an option as well, but as we all probably know, that anime is a goddamn slideshow. i've heard good stuff about the manga tho, so maybe go for that?
╰┈➤ my rating
"mr villain's day off" is just a love letter to life. yes, the story does follow an evil organization invading earth, but if you watched the show then i'm sure you know it really isn't about that. it's a good choice if you just want to chill out and turn your brain off - i must admit it made me smile more than a few times, even if the show itself is just mediocre. it's a solid 6.5/10 for me.

79/100A nice, cute anime to watch on your day offContinue on AniListMy Review of "'Mr. Villain's Day Off"!
Even bad guys need a day off to see the pandas.
____Story____ The story follows Warumono, commonly named "The General" due to his superiority over others as a villain. However, he's only the villain when he works as when he's off, he tries to make the most out of his time to relax and enjoy the one thing he loves the most- pandas. This anime shows what The General's does on his off days from fighting the rangers.
____Visuals____ The visuals are actually a bit nicer than other anime I've watched. The expressions definitely had effort and work put into them, which makes the show more entertaining to watch.
____Characters____ To put it simply, the main character, labeled The General, is a chill guy who doesn't give much care to anything except pandas or anything that resembles a panda. He's mostly emotionless to anything as he just wants to make the most out of his days off from being the villain. Although he seems menacing, he's actually pretty soft outside of his work. The rangers, mainly the red and pink rangers, show up the most in his stories although many of them don't include the rangers in general.
____The Good____ Beauty lies in simplicity, and this anime shows that to be true. Despite its simple story, this anime was entertaining and enjoyable. I liked the small bits of comedy, I like the goofiness of the main character, and I just overall like the setting. It's comfy, and it leans into that trait heavily instead of doing the obvious and prioritizing the action that the General witnesses every day he works. Even in the stories with the General, the anime is able to capture that coziness through the stories of other characters.
____The Bad____ Although it's a good, simple anime, that's really what's preventing it from being anything better. I think with what they've given, they did everything pretty much perfectly. From the small storylines that show the collaboration of the ranger and the General to the obsession with pandas, everything was satisfactory to me. However, there's not much substance to the story, meaning there's nothing really worth seeing in terms of change or high stakes.
____The Downright Ugly____ How could anything be downright ugly in this cute anime?
____Is It Worth The Watch?____ I think that this anime is a good option to watch if you're looking for something relaxing over something filled to the brim with action. I'd personally say it's worth the watch. It's cozy, it's friendly, it's everything you could want from a comfort anime.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I hope this helped you with your decision on whether to watch this anime or not! If you already have watched it, I hope that you can agree with me with some of the points I made. ^^

76/100A flawed yet nice anime. Pandas included.Continue on AniListThey say that evil never sleeps, but that's not always true. Whether it's spent sleeping, eating ice cream, or watching pandas at the zoo, even villains trying to take over the Earth need some time off from all of that. That sentiment is best demonstrated in the anime "Mr. Villain's Day Off", the subject of today's review. I didn't watch it back when it was airing, but I had been hearing about it quite a bit; thus, I eventually decided to give it a watch. If there's one thing I can take away from this anime besides the whole "needing to take some time off" thing, it's that pandas are cute, although that's something I already knew.
The premise of Mr. Villain's Day Off, or "Kyuujitsu no Warumono-san" in Japanese, is pretty self-explanatory. The titular Mr. Villain is a general for an evil organization plotting to exterminate humanity and conquer the Earth in the name of their home planet (which I don't remember if it was even given a name), fighting against a group of Rangers who aim to protect the Earth. (Yes, Rangers as in Power Rangers.) However, most of the anime doesn't focus on these battles between the Rangers and the organization; instead, it is a slice-of-life focusing on the general's time off of work and how he spends it. A common way for him to spend his days off of work is using his annual pass to the local zoo and watching his favorite animals there: pandas. In addition, we sometimes get to see his interactions with other characters whether at work or on his days off, including those with the Rangers.
As you can see, it's the kind of anime that puts a character who is normally in a villain role into that of a protagonist. That being said, to sort of steal a quote from the movie "Wreck-It Ralph", just because he's a bad guy doesn't mean he's a bad guy. He doesn't want his work and private lives to intermingle, he can't help but take multiple pictures of cute animals at once, and he just wants to spend his precious time off of work relaxing; I'm sure we can all relate to all of that. Plus, he has displayed multiple acts of kindness throughout the series, such as when he helps the Red Ranger - who is his enemy, mind you - find his way on the multiple occasions when he gets lost. I think Red Ranger's nickname for the general, "nice guy from the Evil League", really says it all.
In regards to the other characters....well, it's not like I'm not quite as interested in how they spend their times off as the general, but none of them are really bad characters. Sora and Mugi, a pair of twins who combine together to make the Green Ranger, have a pretty sad backstory, so there's that, at least. There's also Trigger, one of the general's coworkers who has a grudge against him, and I'm still not entirely sure whether he amuses me or annoys me. One character that I wish we got to know more about is Hiroki, a child who the general meets at the zoo. His dream is to become an animal doctor, but his mom tells him that he can't do it; I really wanted to see him show his mother that he really is capable of what he wants to accomplish. Other than these characters, I was, unfortunately, not too invested in any of them.
Right there, in that last sentence, lies the main problem of Mr. Villain's Day Off; it's not incredibly interesting. Sure, it's a slice-of-life anime that is not meant to have a real story to it, but you could at least make the supporting characters more memorable than they already are. Although I wouldn't say I'm a tokusatsu fan, it's also a bit of a disappointment for tokusatsu fans who want to see some cool action scenes between the Rangers and the evil organization and don't really care for what happens inbetween the battles. That being said, if anyone who's like that is able to sit through the entire series, they are rewarded with a full-blown battle scene between the Rangers and the evil organization in the final episode. This battle scene doesn't have spectacular animation, but it's campy enough to be a fun watch regardless.
What I said about the animation for the final episode's battle scene can be said about the animation in the rest of the series, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Shin-Ei Animation and SynergySP worked together to give viewers some solid animation with some solid color design; it's nothing thrilling, but it suits the vibe of the anime very well. Speaking of vibes, I have to mention the opening theme, "Yuuho" by Ivudot; the backing track for this song sounds to me like it could be heard on a lo-fi hip hop playlist, and the vocals are pretty good, too! Oh, and the ending theme, "Kyuusoku Juuden" by GLASGOW, is pretty good, too. Even the voice acting was pretty good, and I especially want to give a special mention to Nao Touyama, who voices a convenience store clerk named Yamano who appears a few times in the series; she does a good job at making her sound enthusiastic!
I may have said some pretty negative things about Mr. Villain's Day Off, but I do think it's on the higher side of average. If you want a nice slice-of-life anime to watch on your day off, you could do much worse than this. At least you'll get to see some cute anime pandas!
