68/100I was baited but it's ok, it was still goodContinue on AniListScrolling my streaming site of choice, I came across this show and from the title I automatically assumed it was going be a "homiesexual" show and would have all of the BL-lite comedic shenanigans that come with the territory. That sounded pretty appealing to me, especially since I finished AoT recently and I needed something more happy and wholesome to make up for the misery in that show. Well I got baited because it's actually 3 guys and 3 women crossdressing as guys rather than a sausage fest, but it was still an enjoyable watch.
The show centers around the 6 leads: Tokiwa, Asagi and Hagi on the male side and Suou, Fuji and Kohaku on the female side. The male leads are just normal college students, and the female leads attend college too but they also work in a crossdressing bar, which is quite a central element to the plot (if you can even call something so barebones a plot, lol). A lot of the story happens in the bar, and their work in the bar is the main excuse used by the story to justify the constant crossdressing. After the mixer in the first episode, 3 pairs of relationships are slowly formed: Tokiwa x Suou, Asagi x Fuji and Hagi x Kohaku.
Tokiwa is the most "normal" character in the show, a very average college student, but generally pretty averse to romance, usually unaware of Suou's advances and treating her more like a friend than a member of the opposite sex. Suou being very ikemen in her crossdress does not help her case either, with the nickname "the prince", she looks very handsome and wooes girls all the time by simply being in crossdress. Suou is pretty crazy about Tokiwa, bordering yandere levels, but she is quite a kuudere too so it's not that passionate at least on the outside. She already knew Tokiwa for a while from classes and was the person to set up the mixer and invite Tokiwa and his friends, and she is quite cunning in general. I think this pair is a pretty good baseline for the show's general vibe, and I'd give it 7/10. It's never an annoying time when those two are at the center of the show, but it's not that interesting either.
Asagi is a human dog. Seriously, he is always energetic, cheerful and curious, and is very oblivious to Fuji, who is using him as "research" for her own hardcore BL doujinshi. Fuji has a very cold demeanor and doesn't show any emotions in her voice or on her face, and I don't think anyone other than Asagi would be able to tolerate how controlling and demanding she can be at times. But she also clearly has an interest in Asagi beyond friendship, getting very defensive of him at times, and her using Asagi as "research" is often just an excuse to hang out with him. I think this is the best dynamic in the show and I'd give their scenes a 9/10. Not only does Asagi's gimmick seldom get old and he always manages to be cute, Fuji contrasts with him very well, and the funniest shenanigans usually come out of this pair. Asagi's probably the best character not only among the male leads, but also among the entire cast as well.
Finally we have the Hagi x Kohaku pair. Hagi is a very awkward and socially anxious guy, constantly having trouble interpreting the feelings of not only Kohaku herself, but also his own feelings for Kohaku. Kohaku is pretty self aware and conflicted as well, although nowhere near the extent of Hagi, she is a lot more mature and tries to talk with Hagi to resolve the awkward air and misunderstandings between them, but Hagi always manages to put his feelings in weird cryptic ways, making things even more complicated. This results in the most awkward relationship among the bunch. I don't think this is necessarily bad, and I do think Hagi's confusion about which version of Kohaku he loves more and whether or not that is disrespectful to the "real" her and so on is the only thread in the show which is not surface level. His "am I gay" confusion was also pretty funny, the crossdressing in the show is so irrelevant most of the time, and I think it wouldn't have really mattered for most of the show if the 3 girls were guys or simply normal looking girls, so it's nice to see that aspect being utilized at least somewhere. But what makes this relationship really annoying to watch is how socially awkward and even downright cringe Hagi can be. By the 5th scene of Hagi saying yet again "omg do I like cool Kohaku or cute Kohaku more" and pathetically screaming as he sweats bullets I honestly just wanted to be done with the show altogether. Surely there could have been a better way to portray Hagi's dilemma and maybe also progress his character a bit, but as it stands, these scenes are 5/10 and easily the worst part of the show, and yet it's the only one with stakes and what felt like the most screen time. Kohaku deserves better honestly, and if you're going to make a cyclical relationship like this which goes nowhere for a while, please at least make it entertaining like Love is War. I know I complimented this relationship for being not as surface level as the others, but if this is how it's going to be done I would have preferred a 3rd braindead dynamic. Not like this show's main selling point was ever it's deepness or anything.
Before finishing the review I want to talk about the production value too, which is pretty bad. Doesn't really matter that much because you're not going to be watching a show like this for the amazing action or anything, but the over reliance on chibis, monochrome background characters, and the generally low effort animation all add up. Overall I think it was a pretty fun braindead show to watch, but honestly I don't think I would really recommend it unless that's exactly the thing you're looking for.
