90/100A worthy sequel to Naruto and one of the best Shonens todayContinue on AniListNow that the first two arcs in the manga are done and almost 2 years has passed, I felt like it's time to write a review and express my feelings towards Boruto Two Blue Vortex .. So far..
But before we begin, since this is a sequel manga to NNG, I will summarize the events that led us here.
This review will contain HUGE spoilers for the ending of BORUTO PART 1
Proceed at your own risk
PART 1 ENDING SUMMARY
BORUTO Naruto Next Generations (Part 1) had one of the greatest ending in Shonen for me, the last few volumes alone were a whirlwind of events that forever altered the Naruto Verse.- Naruto lost Kurama to defeat Isshiki
- Sasuke lost his Rinnegan while helping Naruto
- Momoshiki takes over Boruto, Kawaki "kills" Boruto to contain the threat
- Kawaki sealed Naruto to protect him from the Otsutsuki's (and Boruto who's Momoshiki's vessel)
- Boruto got his scar from Kawaki protecting Sarada
- Eida used Omnipotence an ability that altered every one's memory and switched the roles of Kawaki and Boruto
- Kawaki told every one that Boruto killed Naruto
- Sarada unlocked Mangekyo begging Sasuke to help Boruto
- Boruto and Sasuke had to flee the village
Sarada begging Sasuke to help Boruto, which unlocked Mangekyo
Eida's omnipotence forever changed the events of the series
With everyone's memory altered, people now believe Kawaki is Naruto's son and Boruto had to flee the village due to him being framed for Naruto's death (Naruto has been sealed, but Kawaki is hiding that fact)
These events above addressed some of the biggest issues I had with the series, Naruto and Sasuke were too strong, the next generation had no consequences or real tragedies to develop and train. I truly believe the last few volumes of Boruto Part 1 changed all of that
The Elephant in the Room
Now we need to address the elephant in the room, a lot of fans don't like Boruto as a series.. they don't like the idea of Naruto's story continuing.. and to me that is fine.. I grew up with Naruto and it will forever be my favorite series of all time and I'm thankful Boruto exists to continue the next generation's storyline and the previous one I grew up loving so dearly.. Naruto was part of my life for decades, the series has been there for me during funerals, wedding, hardships and everything in between.. I cherish it so much.. So having the chance to see Naruto being Hokage is a blessing for me.. seeing Sasuke as the role of Boruto's sensei is a blessing for me as well..
This is also written by Kishimoto himself, the author of Naruto, and I truly believe the old generation have been handled beautifully. Naruto and Sasuke had 700 chapters of development and I could never imagine that it would still continue here but also be done in a delicate way that doesn't ruin what came before of it.. I'd even argue by favorite versions of Naruto and Sasuke exist in Boruto...TWO BLUE VORTEX
After 3 years on the run and hated by most of his friends, who don't even realize their minds have been altered, Boruto had to endure a ton of hardship. Consistent battles with Code, the last remaining member of Kara, constantly being hunted by the 5 villages and having to live with the emotional trauma of losing his friends, his sister, his parents.. he is no longer the spoiled brat who was the Hokage's son.. but is a lot like Sasuke now but with Naruto's heart
Kawaki's goals are still the same he wants to eliminate all the Otsutsuki even Boruto who's Momoshiki's vessel.. but for the last 3 years he lived comfortably in the village with every one thinking he's Naruto's son.. all of this had to play out this way.. Kawaki had nothing.. his own Dad didn't want him and trafficked him to Jigen/Kara while they kept experminting on him.. to make sure he is the perfect vessel.. he is broken on the inside.. which is why Naruto gravitated towards him, offering him shelter, allowed him to be part of his family, but after the events of Isshiki and with Amado still lingering in the village.. and the constant threat of Momoshiki taking over Boruto.. Kawaki felt that sealing Naruto, the only person he ever truly loved, was the only answer to protect him.. I get it.. even if it is extreme.. even if it does remove him from the storyline..but remember this is a next generation storyline.. just like how we had the likes of Jiraiya, Itachi, Minato, Third Hokage, Asuma, all of them were used to progress the story. This is Kishi's greatest asset as a writer for me..
In a lot of ways Kawaki is the Naruto of the story, while Boruto is Sasuke for comparisons sake but there's still twists and turns that will lead us to that final battle and answer the question.. what will make kawaki evill?
TBV started strong by continuing to address the events of Part 1 and building on them instantly, the pace of the series doesn't let off at all.. it's either always action packed or filled with info dumps to move the story, and Kishi hasn't missed a step whatsoever.. for Part 2 to start off with Boruto returning to Konoha, a wanted man, to protect his friends, his sister, the village from Code was an awesome sight to behold
while doing it in the most disrespectful way possible XD
He's all grown up, shaped by the last 3 years.. it's like he lost a little his innocence ..but they're all grown up too..
the stakes are ever more higher, more deadlier, the story is more interesting with twists and turns that continue to blow me away.. which is hard to do considering 700 chapters of Naruto... 80 monthly chapters of Part 1 Boruto.. it still continues to be fresh with villains that are still rooted in Naruto lore.. a lot of people disregard Boruto as a series to do aliens and blah blah blah.. these themes were introduced in Naruto.. and I didn't like them either but Boruto fleshed them out and made them the best aspect of the seriesBut Boruto is also heavily rooted in Naruto's story too, the biggest villains in the timeskip are still the Ten Tails who have evolved into their own being as the Shinju due to Code meddling around.. they are menacing as hell.. I'd compare them to the Chimeras from HxH.. from Kara to the Shinjus is a scary idea to process and the Otsutsuki are still out there..Jura is an insane villain right now too
Boruto is a prodigy compared to Minato who has mastered a lot of NINJA techniques that any one from the old generation would be proud of ..what makes the story genius for me is the overarching theme of Ninja vs Technlogy, humanity vs technology .. thats what Kara, Kawaki, Amado, brought to the story and Boruto and the new generation are fighting against those obstacles while also embracing them for the better..
its like the real world we live in.. from our smart phones to elon musk's creations (example) we live in a world where we coexist with technlogy but there is a constant discourse of the threat of AI and what the future might bring.. Boruto as a series imo tackles that narrative very well but within the boundaries of the story and themes it tries to convey
There's a lot more here that I wont spoil, a lot has happened, but the spirit of the Naruto franchise is still going strong.. I'd even say Boruto is a worthy sequel at times that does things better.. It's Kishimoto after all and Ikemoto who writes the story understands the world so well.
I love how everything from Part 1 is addressed and the seeds were planned so early on and are being fullfed here. You can tell a lot of heart has been put into this seriesThe new generation outside of Boruto and Kawaki deserve a mention too, from Team 10 to Sumire, Shinki, Himawari, Eida, Daemon, Kara.. it is a great ensemble of characters that add to the story in their own ways that make things that much more interesting.. every one can carry their own..
Ikemoto the artist has improved tremendously as well, he is incredibly talented imo.. Kishi's assistant for 20 years. I can see why. He designed the likes of Zabuza but his designs in Boruto, especially the timeskip are as close to perfection as possible.. the glow up is real here.. he deserves to be mentioned.
CONCLUSION
I don't know if my review is any good or if i even did it right, english isnt my first language, but i'd love it if people gave Boruto a chance.. it is a worthy sequel to Naruto, but even without it, a great Shonen that stands on its ownBoruto as a series doesn't deserve the hate it gets, I chalk it off to it being trendy and popular to hate on and the social media generation we live in, but I really do believe people are missing out.. its their loss
