I watched this movie in theaters in Tokyo the week it aired. It has been a few months and my memory isn't the best so... here goes nothing.
The synopsis on Anilist is very short, it's just "The story is centered around the main character, Akira, and his scientifically created girlfriend, No. 0."
So if this picked up your interest, you're maybe like me, maybe from the poster you imagined the girl would be a (mechanical) robot, and imagined it would be a story about the ethics of creating life, and entering a romantic relationship with an artificial life that owes you its existence, can't defy you, or has trouble understanding human emotions, or maybe from the discarded piles of robots you'd think the girl is the latest model after a long struggle, an allegory for the creator himself being broken... Classic Pygmalion and Galatea conundrum. If that's exactly the kind of things you like and makes you tick, then I absolutely recommend you to skip this, unless you like disappointment. If you somehow manage to imagine some completely other situation from that single poster and short synopsis, then maybe it is for you? But I'm curious how else you'd interpret it.Well, that's almost not the theme of the movie at all. In the setting, those white robots are just subservient, non-sentient beings that are used in every aspect of daily life, they are barely relevant except as convenient plot devices.
The one lacking human emotions here is the Main Character, a "Genius High-Schooler", who inherited some of the work of his mom who died when he was very young and only has a couple vague memories of her (said mom is also a genius who created the other robots). She left him with plans to construct a girl. He never did because he didn't see the point in creating a girl in the first place. Then he hit a deadend with his research and couldn't progress. Then his HS friend got a girlfriend and told him "You gotta try having a GF, man, it'll give you a boost!". So he literally just first try "Make A Girl"© from his mom's plans. Grew her in a vat. Told her "ur my gf now", gives her the cringe name "#0" as if she's just an experiment. Then became upset because he didn't instantly resolved his issues with his research. That's all, no one bats an eye that the dude just created a slave human being in his basement and he brings her to school just like that. Highschool friends think it's because she lacks human emotions, so they make her wage-slave at a restaurant and within 20 minutes in the movie is a perfectly normal girl. But it's the guy who just can't feel attachment. I'll spare you the rest of the plot, but basically he ends up considering that girl the family he never had: it wasn't ever about romance.
The dude just had mommy issues.
Also his mom didn't give birth to him, she grew him in a vat too, so I guess that lines up with the family theme, they're basically siblings at that point?Sure the movie had its moments, the CG is tolerable, but the overall message didn't resonate with me (aka: i don't know what the fuck did I just watch, what point was the writer trying to make?). Too many themes typically associated with this genre were addressed only superficially it felt like they didn't support/were unrelated to the main message, and were just noise and distractions.
