DESCRIPTION

Rape, sexual assault, manipulation... and I guess a bit of story
__Low Tide in Twilight__ | My review/opinion on it
Before I start my review on this manhwa, here’s a friendly reminder that no is no, maybe is not a yes, not saying no is also not a yes, if you’re being forced to do something that is not consent, and giving in because the other person keeps insisting and you basically have no choice but to say “ok sure” is, in my opinion, not consent. I'll try to keep this as spoiler free as possible but I will talk about some things that happen in the story. Also I'll be referring to Euihyun as mc and Taeju as ml just to make it easier.

Anyways, this was a manhwa that I was veryyyy excited for cause of how much I would see people talk about it and post little snippets of the manhwa on insta. So imagine my surprise when I start reading this and the mc gets raped in just the 2nd chapter, might I add by the guy that he’ll end up with at the end…. After that I got very worried, but I’m sure it’ll get better right? This will be a one time thing (still doesn’t excuse it) and it will only get better from here, right? Wrong, very wrong. Throughout the whole story the ml is abusive, manipulative, possessive, keeps sexually assaulting the mc and is just not a good person at all. I honestly don’t know how you can create a character like this and think “ah yes, this character is perfect and everyone will love him”, which I guess the creator was right about that second part cause somehow this manhwa has quite a high rating. Like I kinda understand what the intent with this character was, someone who starts as the bad guy but ends up redeeming himself and becomes a good person to protect the one he loves. Unfortunately, he does way too many bad things and the things that he does are REALLY bad, to the point where he doesn't deserve forgiving.

Season 1

At the end of season 1, I think, the mc basically starts working for the ml as his prostitute without really having a choice, cause that was the only way that he could pay off his debt as soon as possible to protect his little brother. So he’s basically being forced to have sex with another person whenever they want and the mc can’t even say no. I don’t think you need to be very smart to realize how wrong this is.

Season 2

In season 2, at the beginning of chapter 50 something, they give you a warning saying “this episode contains scenes of sexual assault that may disturb the readers” or whatever and I almost wanted to laugh at this warning. First of all, those scenes were RAPE, not sexual assault, if someone is forcing another person to have sex that is called rape. And the fact that they give you this warning in this specific chapter when we already got so many scenes of rape and sexual assault before???? You’re giving us a warning now??? This manhwa is set in the omegaverse which I couldn’t care less, if the story is good I don’t mind the alpha/omega/men getting pregnant thing, but I do hate how they use “going into heat” as an excuse for forced sex. Spoiler warning for what happens in these chapters, but the ml goes into heat and drags the mc to the car to have sex with him. The mc keeps saying “no” but they still have sex multiple times. I’m not gonna say it again but I think we all know what this is called by now. And omg I don’t care that he’s in heat and can’t control himself, that’s not a fucking excuse. Similar to this, earlier in the story, the mc goes into heat and the ml basically takes advantage of him and they have sex multiple times. The next day, the mc doesn’t remember anything cause he wasn’t in his right mind. This is abusive, taking advantage of someone and it is not consensual. And again, I don’t fucking care that he was in heat and it “was painful”, it still wasn’t consensual.

Season 3

Now season 3 was…. better. Still not the best but definitely better. The ml does recognize his mistakes and he does somewhat try to fix them. Sure, he has some character development, but he doesn’t become a fucking saint and it still doesn’t excuse all the shit he did in the past. Until the last few chapters he was still veryyy possessive, to the point of lying to and making the mc suffer so that he wouldn’t leave him and that the mc had no choice but to rely on the ml. That’s fucking weird and definitely not love. Them ending up together is also so weird to me?? I mean it’s a bl manhwa so obviously I knew the two main characters would end up together, but the mc almost never showed affection towards the ml and he would just be forced to do whatever the ml wanted, always fighting back against him. Then because the ml “helped” him and gave him a house and food, he starts to get attatched and doesn’t know how to live without the ml. I’m now realizing this is basically stockholm syndrome, which is very much not a good thing.

As bad as the manhwa was, there were a few things I liked. The mc, Euihyun, had a very strong personality and he fought whenever he was put in a tough situation and I liked how strong minded he was. It was also really sweet to see how much he cared for his brother and would do anything for him. That’s also the other thing I really enjoyed, the relationship between Euihyun and Euiyoung, it was nice to see how much they cared and relied on each other and always wanting to stay together. But that’s it, that’s the only things I liked.

Should you read this manhwa? You do you boo, but I honestly don't know how you can read 100 chapters of this and still like this story. I only kept reading cause I still had hope that it would somehow get better. Let's just say it wasn't worth it.

Wow, it's finally over..
Wow it’s finally over.. I’ve been with this manhwa through thick and thin. Even back when I was with Noah, my first love. Picking this up again after almost two years was so worth it. It feels kinda weird to press the ‘completed’ button haha. The character building in this was phenomenal. Watching Euihyun and Taeju's relationship slowly change over time for the better was really healing for me. Seeing Euihyun have issues about feeling “cheap” and “dirty”, Taeju continuously blaming himself for believing he ruined Euihyun and the relationship after he realized how much he values Euihyun, and both of them developing an inferiority complex was so interesting to me because it’s such a rarity to see such well rounded personalities and thought out relationships in manhwas these days. The push and pull of their relationship(like a tide?) immersed me into the story more. Seeing Euihyun shake under the alpha at the club felt really realistic:( while I don’t want to say Euihyun‘s relatable bc I don’t hope for his situation to be relatable to anyone, I will say he’s way more realistic than most ukes. Watching Euihyun slowly change from rejecting Taeju's advances to unhealthily connecting Taeju to his own self worth was quite sad but very real. Euihyun's such a complex character- he feels trapped, through his financial situation and emotionally. He puts on a fierce face, using his fists with anyone who crosses his boundaries because he's scared. He has nothing, only his brother. Some people are upset that he attempted to drown the both of them at the start but that would actually seem like the most logical way out especially if you're in debt to a mafia that could kill you in much more gruesome ways. To add, Euihyun was not in his right mind and was blanking out while attempting as many are. He didn't even notice how scared Euiyoung was. I think too much hate is given to him for that but he was only doing what he believed to be best for his brother and himself. The clash of all the characters in the story was quite interesting to see and kept the story flowing and alive. The author did a good job with younger brother, Euiyoung. He really felt like a kid rather than an overly smart or under-whelmingly dumb kid. His reaction to his teeth falling out and how he treated Taeju vs. his brother was so cute!! I will admit, tears were flowing reading his thoughts wondering why Euihyun abandoned him when Euiyoung was being handed over to his biological father. The conception dream at the end of season 2 was such a genius set up for season 3 so kudos to the author for that. I liked seeing the symbolism of the water (or the tide) changing from where Euihyun almost took his life, giving the tide a feeling of gloom and an unforgiving sense of death, to him floating peacefully in the water in his dream, symbolizing life and maybe even a rebirth emotionally as he started to open himself up to Taeju. Even though this manhwa took long to finish, I think the slow updates were a bit refreshing and fitting for this. It kind of shows that you can’t force or rush a relationship, you can’t force somebody to like you. Even though the baby probably won’t ever be shown now that it’s finished, I’m still satisfied. This manhwa made me emotional, I both laughed and cried to this. I've read a lot of manhwa over the years but this one really stuck with me and taught me a lot about relationships. It's also more memorable to me because it found it reflecting my own love life progressively getting better as the stories and character's did. The author did a good job of keeping me on edge too?. Some of the scenes felt..quiet in a way I can’t explain it. I started an album just to put the panels that capture that feeling. The morning after a suicide attempt, the feeling sitting alone outside without any music with nobody around, only the wind blowing. The author captured that feeling really well I almost wanted to cry. It was so beautiful. Overall it touched me to see them have a healthy relationship even after the faltering on both sides and a whole lot of time.
