60/100Hong's weakest work to date is still above average.Continue on AniListI'd like to share my thoughts about Master Hong's work, an author who is really dear to me.
Their creations are very interesting even though the premises are quite simple, they are always able to develop plots and personalities without sounding over the top or too tropey.
I've noticed a lack of hype or reviews for their work, so I've decided to review them bit by bit.
"Flowar" (Available on Webtoon) is like their take on the "Alien" story based on plants.
Ms. Sora Han, a child, has a heart condition and gets a plant-based heart transplant in a futuristic setting.
A unique event for humanity.
The story follows her journey later on in life as an astronaut into space to rescue an exploration spaceship sent to Proxima B, where scientists suspect life may be suitable for us.
There are definitely some "Alien" vibes in the plot.In my opinion, "Flowar" is the weakest work by Hong due to a heavy focus on action.
However, this is largely due to my personal taste. There's a lot of action scenes which, in my opinion, don't suit an author like Hong, who is capable of creating incredible human drama in masterfully written manhwa such as "Delusion" and "Hwaja."
The action scenes became boring, and I found myself quickly scrolling through them in order to have some "meat" to chew on.Despite this, the dialogue, particularly with the main villains, is where the work shines.
There are many secrets and some predictable moments, but there's a clever revelation that keeps the interest high. The "villains" as there are multiple, are not anything interesting, none of them is memorable I have even forgotten some names.
The ominous atmosphere of the spaceship on the other hand was tangible and gave strong sense of claustrophobia, as someone stuck near a star 4.5 light years from Earth.Visually, as usual, Hong's work is a treat for the eyes. Sora, like many of Hong's female leads, is beautiful and independent, and she is the center of everything. Without her, the manhwa would have been below average.
Various plants and a suit armors are introduced, all of which are as impressive as the spaceship's unique design, which is unusual compared to other space stories. This evaluation is based on my personal enjoyment, and as mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of action-packed stories. However, if you enjoy fighting and action, this work might be a treat for you.
My personal rating is neutral. Considering that Hong is a highly skilled artist in my eyes, I would say this work is one of the weakest. I'd give it a neutral 60, but if you enjoy shounen themes or stories involving the "power of love" trope, you may rate it higher.
This is a miss in their catalogue, but as usual, I strongly recommend to follow Hong.
