DESCRIPTION

Shiori is turning 35, married for 9 years and trying to adapt to the unvarying and boring routine as a wife. As Shiori reads through the pages, she realizes it is her husband's diary where he put down in writing all his private moments with his lover! Is it time for Shiori to start her own diary?

Not a B-grade porn manga but a masterpiece
An Honest Raw Review

Shiori's Diary is about a woman in sexless marriage who finds her husband's diary detailing his affair like a piece of literature and decides to start having one while also maintaining a diary similar to her husbands. This is a plot of porn but somehow Tsuyatsuya turned this porn plot into an amazing story hooking the readers with both the plot and his art style. And when I say readers, I usually refer to myself alone. Or maybe, the lack of blood in my head made me feel that this is such masterpiece. Or is it?
- The Plot
  Shiori had already come to terms with her sexless marriage but after reading her husbands "sex escapades", she decides to have sex with her ex who she met in a high school reunion held a week after finding the diary. This part refers to her regrets, a very natural response for a housewife not blinded by lust. This start leads to her downfall as she gets more and more consumed by lust, the abstinence made her long for it more than she realized thus becoming a wild animal in bed.
  Of course someone finds out. Its no fun if the affair goes unchecked but our male lead, Tooru, keeps his mouth shut. The plot only thickens afterwards and describing is something that is not part of this review.
- The Characters
  I very much like Shiori in how much she understands her carnal desire but she just cant resist it. What motivates her to continue her affair is a mix of lust and reading the pages of her husbands diary, the detailed affair. Its not easy to single out the reason here. This makes her appear complex and in a way human, after all sex is something she does not have a lot of experience with. But what Tsuyatsuya does the best is also throw some small nuances into her, showing her more woman like than just a cheat. Her voluptuous body, unable to stop reading her husbands diary and also maintaining the whole facade just to continue reading the diary. I love this about her, even she knows its wrong, she cant stop.
  Tooru, he is a simple man. His honesty and plain looks is what contrasts him with Shiori. If I had to describe him, he is like bay-leaf in chole bhature, I would remove the bay-leaf when I am eating it but not when I am cooking it. He plays a highly vital role in helping us understand Shiori without giving away his personality too much. Understanding a person without a stimulus is useless. On his own, he leads a plain life but with pair him with Shiori, it blossoms into a hot steamy sex affair. What I love the most about him is that he always understood her and respected her wishes without asking too much. It might be his pink-brainedness but that made Shiori love him.
- My Take on Ending
  I believe whole heartedly that the husband was cheating. Even if at the end he says to the bartender that he is always alone, he did not mean physically. His expression might be grave but I believe that he had affair but it ended badly. In one of the entries, the husband writes about a fight with the mistress and later that fight turns into sex. I believe the fight happened but the sex didn't, that part and following entries were fantasy. A few chapters after reading this entry, she finds her diary upside down and later there is also an entry about the mistress asking about his wife. I believe these entries to be a cry for help so that Shiori confronts him and he can then cowardly admit to affair. Kyoto trip was his way of cross-verifying if Shiori was really having an affair and the diary was not just a figment of her fantasy.
I highly recommend it not because of the sexual nature but due to Tsuyatsuya's way of telling fantastic stories with complex characters and their burdens. It is a masterpiece, to be able to represent Shiori in such a simple manner yet, with a deep understanding.
