80/100A Neat Take on The "Death Game" GenreContinue on AniListI have to admit, when I first read the title of this manga, I got quite curious and thought this was gonna be a death game that takes place in another world.
What I got instead was a pretty funny, more office kind of comedy thats more about this world of death games and beings who are after peoples souls.
As the summary describes, the manga is about an office worker named Himi, who has a tedency to talk about wanting to die whenever he gets stressed. Which grabs the attention of a death god wanting him and people to fight to the death with no rules...until he points out a very logical flaw in that...
Managing to keep using that logic, he gets everyone to safety and learns that the death god is a girl named Mei, who has just started her job as a death god
...and while initially believing that this is the end of it, Himi soon finds himself constantly dragged back into situations like this, either by Mei (who'se supervisors show interest in Himi), devils or angels...
Which is one of the most interesting aspects of this manga. The fact that it introduces this world, where apparently beings like death gods and demons use death games as a way to harvest souls. But at the same time, it still uses company structures and is being treated like working in an office, which is a take on the whole death game genre I personally haven't seen before.
And Himi and Mei certainly are one of the best things about this manga and their dynamic is one of the main-draws in my opinion. Him being a tired veteran of the office, knowing about stuff like rules, deadlines, having to take care of his juniors...
Meanwhile Mei is an eager girl, who just started the corperate world of death games and death gods. Naive, still makes mistakes...but she really wants to prove that she has what it takes to take peoples souls (and she does show that underneath it, she can have a more serious side to herself)And their dynamic leads to a lot of great moments and interactions between these two, both funny...but also heartwarming
All of these stop this series from just becoming a one joke series, as you see the boss-subordinate relationship between these two develop over the chapters.
May of the other characters in this series are pretty great too and add to explaining this series world, where apparently death gods, demons and angels all fight for the souls of humans in their own different, corporate ways.
My favourites are both Himis Manager Kuro who understands Himi the most and who sees the potential in Mei and Kumai a devil who traps people in Isekai situations and loves gaming.
Each of these characters do get little moments showing off their personalities and even a character like Kumai, who you thinks is sort of never taking anything seriously, suddenly reveals her knowledge of office politics and rights
Though some I do feel like could have had more fleshing out, like Himis subordinate who has a crush on him (which never really gets resolved or anything) or the final antagonist of the story, who just sorta appears out of nowhere to be the final antagonist...
Which leads me to my one big issue with this series...the fact that it is rather short with just 18 chapters. And how because of that, some things are just kinda rushed through, while others don't really get resolved. And I do wish we got to see more the corporate stuff they introduced us in this world.
Still, I would say that the ending is still rather nice and feels like a good send-off for these characters.
So yeah, if reading this makes you curious about checking this manga out, I can still recommend it. For what it is, still a pretty great, pretty funny series that really would have benefited from being longer.
